Max FOV Is Not a Free Competitive Advantage
The FOV slider creates a seductive story: wider means more information, therefore maximum means better. The first half is true. The conclusion is not.
A wider field of view places more of the world inside the same display area. Peripheral threats can appear sooner, but objects occupy fewer screen pixels and may look farther away. Depending on the game, aspect ratio, and projection, the displayed number may also describe horizontal or vertical FOV differently.
The four-way tradeoff
Awareness
More peripheral world is visible. This helps in close fights and when threats can enter from several angles.
Target readability
The same opponent can look smaller. If you lose head and shoulder detail at common engagement ranges, the extra peripheral view may cost precision.
Motion comfort
Very narrow views can feel tunnel-like; very wide views can introduce distortion. Comfort depends on screen size, viewing distance, motion, and the individual player.
Performance and interface
Some games render more scene content at wider settings, while others manage performance differently. Weapon models, effects, or HUD elements may also change. Test rather than assume.
A ten-minute calibration
Pick a repeatable training route. Start near the default. Run the same close-range turn, medium-range target acquisition, and rapid movement sequence at three settings. Record accuracy, missed peripheral cues, frame consistency, and discomfort.
Keep the middle value unless one alternative wins clearly. Then leave it unchanged for several sessions. Constantly adjusting the camera destroys the adaptation you are trying to measure.
Why copying pros fails
A professional’s setting is evidence about that player’s game, monitor, posture, role, habits, and preference. It is not a prescription for your 16-inch laptop or living-room television. Even identical numbers can represent different views across games.
